Just when you think nothing can get more surprising, something in K-Pop always throws you off. Since it’s nearing the end of the year, award season is approaching which means tons of futile fanwars, hopefully entertaining performances, and fun guest appearances.
In a recent press conference, Mnet announced that among the guests they have slated to appear at the 3-day award show, Janet Jackson will be among one of the celebrities scheduled to appear at this year’s MAMA (Mnet Music Asian Award). I guess this doesn’t really come as a surprise since MAMA has been inviting Western artists, such as Timbaland and Wiz Khalifa, to attend in past years. I guess the news is more confusing than surprising because you just never know who MAMA will be paying to bring to the award show. I guess this year’s star was Janet Jackson which should be fun and powerful if anything.
MAMA is my least favorite award show out of all the award shows for a variety of reasons. This year, the award show is going to be 3 days long with performances happening in Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea. While I can care less about the awards itself, I actually am looking forward to the performances since I find performances at the MAMA awards pretty decent. Some of the most memorable year end award performances have come from MAMA such as in 2015 when 2NE1 performed their hits ‘Fire’ and ‘I Am the Best.’ We can’t also forget EXO’s ‘Monster’ back in 2016 as well as BTS’s phenomenal ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears’ performance the same year.
Just like with many other award shows, MAMA hands out daesang’s to the top K-Pop groups to make fans happy and to rake in that money. I predict that TWICE, BTS, and Wanna One will probably win something this year since they are the bigger groups in K-Pop currently. I would want to also say EXO, but they barely released their album just earlier this month so only EXO-CBX’s album from this year will be counted. None of YG and SM’s artists are also attending this year’s MAMA so I’m not so sure if they’ll be winning any awards which is why I left them out. As for the groups winning the daesangs specifically, it’ll be too difficult to make any predictions on that since anything is up in the air. If I had to predict who will win what award, I would guess:
- Artist of the Year: BTS
- Song of the Year: What is Love – TWICE
I assume MAMA doesn’t have an ‘Album of the Year’ award since it didn’t show up in the voting section.
There’s also going to be a few collaborations which should be interesting to say the least. As with the past, Korean actors and actresses will also be present at the award show including: Kim Dong-wook (The Guest), Seo Hyun-jin (The Beauty Inside), Yang Se-jong (Temperature of Love), Jang Hyuk (Bad Papa), Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing, and yes I know! I’m completely shocked too! He’s one of my favorites!), and many more. I’m looking forward to the actors more than I am of the idols, but hey, if you have Hwang Jung-min coming then I’m sold!
MAMA 2018 will be held on December 10 in South Korea, December 12 in Japan, and December 14 in Hong Kong. South Korea’s date will be more of a platform for this year’s rookie groups to perform (which should be pretty competitive considering this year’s rookie groups were pretty impressive) while Japan and Hong Kong will be reserved for the Sunbae groups in K-Pop.
