Mok-ha constantly finds herself at a crossroad. Should she wait for Ki-ho or should she let go of any hope of reuniting with him? Should she pursue her dreams of becoming a singer or pursue something else? Should she run away from her fears or should she face them straight-on?

Castaway Diva Episode 6: Secrets vs. Lies

Bo-geol follows Woo-hak to Ki-ho’s father’s house. When he enters, he attempts to get his brother out of there but Woo-hak doesn’t budge so easily. He wants to know why there’s a photo of him, Bo-geol, Mommy Kang, and Ki-ho’s father hung up in the living room. So Bo-geol explains the truth to his brother. The episode takes us back to a young Ki-ho and his brother, Chae-ho, hiding from their father in their house. They’re terrified as they anxiously wait inside of the bedroom closet hoping to not get discovered by their angry father. But the wait doesn’t last for long and they’re found shortly. Their dad is furious at Ki-ho for hiding money in his locker at school. While Chae-ho and Mommy Kang attempt to calm Ki-ho’s father down, Ki-ho spills the truth to his father. Yes, he was hiding money to run away. Yes, their lives would be so much better without him in it. Ki-ho’s father only gets angrier and he grabs a dining chair nearby. Chae-ho jumps out just in time to protect his brother from getting hit.

That’s how Woo-hak ended up at the hospital with memory loss. That’s also why Bo-geol and their mom erased their old identities and came up with new ones. Woo-hak argues that they should try to reclaim their identities but Bo-geol objects. They can’t and must not. If they did, their entire family would be destroyed. While Woo-hak inquires for more information on Bo-geol’s response, a voiceover from Mok-ha to Ki-ho plays in the background,

Ki-ho, how long can a secret remain a secret? If we cover the secret under layers of lies, can we keep the secret from surfacing? I truly hope this peaceful moment granted to us by the secret will pass slowly. I hope it will last for a long time.

Bo-geol shares some more information with Woo-hak that shocks Woo-hak. Back at home, Mok-ha questions Mommy Kang on a quote that Ki-ho used to share with her. Perhaps, does Mommy Kang know a guy named Jung Ki-ho? Mommy Kang feigns ignorance; she knows no one by that name and her quote is a pretty common one that moms say to their sons all the time. So Mommy Kang walks away afterwards but the smile on her face quickly vanishes. Meanwhile, a farmer checks up on the river in his village and complains about the drought. How much longer will the drought last?

Mok-ha suffers a nightmare of a boar chasing after her on the deserted island and she wakes her roommate, Ran-joo, up. She attempts to shrug off the nightmare. Woo-hak prepares breakfast for everyone in the house to eat. It seems a bit odd for Woo-hak to do such a thing but he reasons that there’s no special occasion. He’s just grateful that’s all. Mommy Kang senses that there’s something strange going on so she brings up Mok-ha’s question from the night before to Bo-geol. Bo-geol comes clean to his mom and reveals to her about the dangerous situation involving Mok-ha and her husband at the old Seoul Station. He knows about Mok-ha so they must do everything they can to protect her. Mommy Kang panics upon learning the information.

Ran-joo is presented with good news from CEO Hwang about the re-release of her albums. She’s still got it and it seems like her albums are going to sell well. Ran-joo’s solo celebration is interrupted by a sudden visit from Woo-hak who meets with Mok-ha. He provides her with a brief update on Ki-ho who he claims he met and is happily married. To provide some evidence, Woo-hak hands the USB drive with Mok-ha’s music video on it to Mok-ha. Ki-ho is living well. But Mok-ha just can’t forget about Ki-ho so easily and she chats with Ran-joo about the situation. She brings up the same exact quote that Mommy Kang said the night before that Ki-ho claimed his mother used to say to him all the time. Plus, isn’t it crazy that both Woo-hak and Bo-geol were the ones who discovered her on the deserted island? Mok-ha has her suspicions that maybe – just maybe – one of the brothers could potentially be Ki-ho.

While at work, Woo-hak is instructed by his boss to investigate the car accident involving Dae-woong. He agrees without any resistance right away which shocks his boss and he heads out to the hospital where Dae-woong is in critical condition. When he arrives, he finds Dae-woong’s wife, Young-ju, arguing with two police officers outside in the hallway about the accident. Young-ju can’t help but grow suspicious that someone could have been behind this. Giant hornets somehow got into the car and caused Dae-woong to crash? Plus, the memory card for his dash cam has also gone missing. And sure enough, the person behind the car accident was none other than Ki-ho’s father. He takes a look at the videos recorded on Dae-woong’s car dash cam on his laptop.

Another week means another recording for ‘Heydey Again’ which Ran-joo has won for 4 weeks straight. Things are shaping up for her and her albums are also selling well. But CEO Lee doesn’t plan on backing down so easily and Ran-joo feels threatened when she learns that her next opponent on ‘Heyday Again’ is popular superstar, Eun Mo-rae. CEO Lee persuades Mo-rae that this situation also concerns her because Ran-joo plans on training Mok-ha to become the next superstar. Mok-ha takes it to Main PD Hong, Bo-geol, and the rest of the team behind ‘Heyday Again’ on the casting of Mo-rae. It doesn’t really make any sense to have her on the show but the staff feel differently. They’re excited at the thought of a global star on their show. Things only worsen when Manager Park shows up just minutes later to the same meeting. He’s treated warmly by the staff with some iced coffee (vs. Mok-ha who only received canned coffee) and he also gets his special request fulfilled by the staff. Mo-rae wishes to live lip-sync (pre-record the song ahead of time and then lip-sync to it during the actual filming). Once again, Mok-ha is the only one who objects. Exceptions are made for superstar Mo-rae and since Manager Park knows about Mok-ha’s secret as Ran-joo’s back-up singer, Mok-ha can’t say much.

After the meeting, Mok-ha leaves the conference room and knocks out a bin full of trash. While picking up the items inside the trash can, she’s greeted by Bo-geol who hands her a handkerchief. But she’s frustrated and upset at him. Why is he so wishy-washy? Comforting her one second and then being cold to her the next (FORREALLLL! You tell him how it is, Mok-ha!! I’m on your side girl!!). Mok-ha storms away.

Ran-joo is reminded of Mo-rae everywhere she goes. While at a doctor’s appointment to receive updates on her vocal cords, Ran-joo learns that she’s fine physically. Maybe her inability to hit high notes or to sing like she did in the past is a psychological issue, not a physical one. Ran-joo’s doctor then brings up the competition between Mo-rae and Ran-joo on ‘Heyday Again.’ As if that wasn’t enough, Ran-joo comes across a video playing on a huge screen outside after the appointment. She’s reminded of the moment when she was replaced by Mo-rae as RnJ Entertainment’s cash cow. CEO Lee had no problem telling her to her face that Mo-rae was the new moneymaker, not her. Everywhere Ran-joo goes, she can’t seem to escape from Mo-rae.

The same goes for Mo-rae who has a conversation with her hairstylist at the hair salon about Ran-joo. She plans on singing Ran-joo’s debut single “Open Your Eyes” when she appears on ‘Heyday Again.’ The reason why? Out of spite for Ran-joo. Back when Mo-rae was an up and coming singer for RnJ Entertainment, she wanted to record and release her own version of “Open Your Eyes” for her first album. But Ran-joo rejected the request. Mo-rae assumes it must have been because Ran-joo found the song to be more fitting for Mok-ha than her which Ran-joo agreed with. Ever since then, Mo-rae’s felt inferior to Mok-ha and despised Ran-joo.

Mommy Kang sits down with Mok-ha after closing their hair salon to have a talk with her. Mommy Kang discourages Mok-ha from becoming a singer; maybe Mok-ha can pursue something similar to her and become a hairdresser instead. Mok-ha doesn’t understand where Mommy Kang is coming from; in her heart, she still wishes to become a singer. Bo-geol, who had overheard this conversation between his mom and Mok-ha, comforts Mok-ha later on that night. She shouldn’t take anything his mom said to her earlier to heart. But Mok-ha still isn’t so happy with Bo-geol. Unlike what she once thought, she’s certain that he’s definitely not Ki-ho. Unlike Ki-ho who was reliable, Bo-geol is the complete opposite. He’s weak and pathetic. So why didn’t Mok-ha speak up earlier to Manager Park during their work meeting then? Mok-ha has her own reason for her actions and Bo-geol argues that he has his own reasons for his behavior as well.

The episode rewinds back to the conversation that Bo-geol and Woo-hak had about their father. Though Woo-hak wanted to reclaim their names and identities, Bo-geol rejected the idea out of concern for their safety. Their father is capable of finding them at any time and any location. And sure enough, their father finally lands on an audio recording from Dae-woong’s car’s dash cam of Dae-woong talking to Young-ju about Ki-ho and Mok-ha. He grows upset hearing that Ki-ho is alive and well.

That night, Mok-ha goes outside for some air after suffering yet the same nightmare of being chased by a boar. Woo-hak is also sitting outside while listening to Ran-joo’s song so Mok-ha joins in. They chat about Ran-joo and Mok-ha asks for some feedback from Woo-hak. How does she compare to her favorite idol? Mok-ha isn’t quite there just yet but with some experience, she’ll improve and get better. Mok-ha notes that Woo-hak has a strange way of comforting others but she sort of likes it. The two proceed to listen to Ran-joo’s song together. Meanwhile, Bo-geol edits the performance by Ran-joo and Mok-ha back at CEO Hwang’s daughter’s wedding. The video gets him thinking.

It’s the day of filming for ‘Heyday Again.’ Ran-joo and Mok-ha do some meditation together to remove any bad vibes, especially in regards to Mo-rae. When they arrive at the building, Ran-joo comes close to just going straight to the basement parking lot. The majority of the fans waiting outside the building are fans of Mo-rae. But with an encouraging text from CEO Hwang, Ran-joo gathers the courage to present herself on the red carpet in front of the crowd. The moment is quickly ruined by Mo-rae who purposely intervenes with her presence. Ran-joo proves that she’s the original queen when she introduces Mo-rae to Mok-ha. She reminds Mo-rae that Mok-ha could have been in her spot if she had actually shown up 15 years earlier. Inside the building, Bo-geol has to take over for Main PD Hong who’s been transported to the hospital.

Dong-min reviews Mo-rae’s pre-recording of her song and calls Bo-geol to check up on it. On the way to Mo-rae’s waiting room, he bumps into Mok-ha who purposely attempts to avoid him. She somehow finds herself right by Mo-rae’s waiting room so she’s stopped by the superstar for questioning. Does Mok-ha agree with Ran-joo’s remarks earlier? Does Mok-ha really believe that stardom came easy for Mo-rae? With Manager Park threatening Mok-ha by waving his cell phone and Bo-geol standing nearby silently, Mok-ha debates on what to say or how to react. She’s reminded of her nightmare – the one where she was being chased by a boar. Turns out that it wasn’t a dream. It actually happened to Mok-ha back when she was on the deserted island. And one day, instead of running away from the boar, she caught it instead with a trap.

So Mok-ha doesn’t run away from Mo-rae’s question or presence. She’s not scared or intimidated. Instead, she answers honestly. No, things weren’t easy for Mo-rae but it does seem like Mo-rae sure is anxious. If she really was so confident, she wouldn’t be lip syncing for the show. Mok-ha challenges Mo-rae to sing live for her performance; if she does, she’ll give Mo-rae her props and credit. Before Manager Park or Mo-rae can say anything, Bo-geol interrupts by requesting that Mok-ha and Mo-rae follow after him. Oh ho ho. You love to see it!

Back near the house, Daddy Kang steps outside for a smoke. He has to disguise himself so as to not be seen by his wife or anyone else but his secret doesn’t stay a secret for too long. Woo-hak sneaks up on his father to chat. He won’t tell anyone about his father’s smoking but more importantly, he wants his father to tell him the truth about why they changed their names and identities. How did they get to where they are now? Woo-hak’s regained some of his memories so Daddy Kang can’t lie to Woo-hak.

Bo-geol and Mok-ha walk to a meeting room together to go over the script for the recording. Mok-ha is confident Ran-joo will win and defeat Mo-rae. But Bo-geol won’t let Ran-joo or Mo-rae off so easily. As the Main PD for the filming, he’s in charge and he quickly sets expectations. He wants both Ran-joo and Mo-rae to sing live. No lip-syncing. No exceptions. Mo-rae wants out and she walks away. Ran-joo claims that she’s never lip-synced before but everyone in the room knows the truth. There’s no hiding or denying it. If Ran-joo wins, Bo-geol wants Mok-ha to be the one to get on stage and reveal the truth to everyone. He wants her to let everyone know that she’s been the one singing for Ran-joo behind the stage. Mok-ha is so stunned she’s unsure of what to say. While Mok-ha hesitates and panics, Bo-geol stares at her with a gleam in his eyes, secretly hoping that Mok-ha will accept and say yes.
