Lee Min-ho and Gong Hyo-jin got a little bit of a break in episode 9 since it was primarily focused on Dong-Ah’s rescue mission and the team brainstorming how to go about saving our commander and tourist. Of course, the drama being the drama that it is, Dong-Ah’s rescue mission had its fair share of bumps and bruises but he ultimately was able to rescue Eve and Gong Ryong. Episode 10 proceeded to show the aftermath of the rescue, with questions about why Gong Ryong was left behind as well as the complicated love square between our characters.
This weekend’s episodes felt like it was Dong-Ah’s time to shine and while I felt neutral about anything that pertained to his work or rescue mission, I was surprised at how much time he got when it came to him and Eve. It’s clear the drama was trying to set up his redemption arc and I wasn’t the biggest fan of it. I didn’t really care how he pleaded for Eve’s forgiveness after coming clean to her about how he slept with Tae-hee. I didn’t care for the birthday party the team threw him and how they played a video clip of him crying for Eve and how desperate he was to save her (I dare say, I actually got secondhand embarrassment instead). Maybe the drama did it as a way to make Gong Ryong jealous but how could anyone care about Dong-Ah after he slept with Tae-hee and commented that Eve’s not good at dating? Why did the drama attempt to make me feel bad for Dong-Ah or just feel anything for him in general?
The same thing could be said about Gong Ryong who was in a relationship with Go-eun and then confessed to Eve just a few days into being in the space station with her. Go-eun and Gong Ryong’s relationship wasn’t so clean and smooth either and in a way, it just seems like all the relationships in this drama are so messy and complicated. Really, none of the relationships in this drama are built on any trust or sincerity and everyone’s selfish and opportunistic. Gong Ryong admitted that he was with Go-eun because he knew he would benefit from it. Eve was upset and heartbroken over Dong-Ah’s actions with Tae-hee so she engaged in intercourse with Gong Ryong afterwards (and because they were dying at that point so she was just like forget it, let’s just go ahead and do this). Gang-su loved Go-eun so much he interrupted Gong Ryong’s oxygen therapy session and beat him up because he saw Go-eun crying over Gong Ryong (this scene made me laugh because of how makjang it felt. It was like something you would see in a weekend drama on one of the big 3 networks LOL).
Just when I was enjoying the one little peaceful moment we got at the end of episode 10 with Gong Ryong and Eve enjoying some food at the convenience store (but of course, I was scared that one of them would get hit by a Truck of Doom while crossing the street.. like I’m just so traumatized at this point), Eve follows it up with basically wanting to pretend as if nothing happened between her and Gong Ryong. I actually understood where she was coming from and I agree with her decision to an extent. They were the only ones left in the space station and were dying. They only had each other. They didn’t know if and when they were going to be rescued. They sort of already had this attraction for each other so they decided to act upon those feelings. But now that they were back on land and were finally in the same surroundings as everyone else, Eve came back to reality and realized that she may have been a bit delusional out in the space station. Narratively, this is the inevitable break-up that happens between the main couple that every drama (for some reason) just needs to have and implement but I actually wasn’t so upset with it. I think Eve was being reasonable and logical. They were in their own little worlds (literally) out in the space station and returning to Earth finally woke her up.
It’s a good thing that the drama gave me the answer to the question I was curious about which was if our space crew was going to eventually return to Earth. Now that they are back on land and interacting with the rest of the characters, the next thing that the drama has been ramping up for is the big reveal with the MZ group eggs case and their involvement with sending Gong Ryong out to space to do the experiment. It’s hard to believe that we’re already more than halfway into the show and that there’s only three weeks left in the drama. In a way, I’m sort of glad that the drama is almost done LOL. “When the Stars Gossip” has got to be one of the most interesting, strange, odd, and exhausting watching experiences I’ve ever endured. I’m positive that I won’t miss this drama when it ends but I think I’ll stick it out given that there’s only three weeks left anyways.
