This week’s episode still weren’t as impressive as episodes 3 and 4 but I appreciated that it was a bit more engaging and intriguing. While episode 7 was not my favorite, episode 8 proved to be much better by primarily focusing on the Cha Seong-wook case that happened 2 decades ago. It was a case that the drama had sprinkled little hints about here and there but episode 8 pinned the spotlight on the case which was nice for a change. While I felt like there was a little too much that went on in episode 7, I liked how stable episode 8 was.
The scene of So-ryong confronting President Koo in episode 8 has to be one of the most intense scenes so far in the drama and spoke volumes about 1) Kim Hye-soo’s amazing acting skills and 2) So-ryong’s determination in bringing the truth to light no matter who it was she’s going up against. Although Chief Park had initial concerns, So-ryong proved that she was a fighter and that she would do whatever she had to do to get the truth. She had already taken on the challenge of going up against President Koo earlier in the drama and now we finally got to return to this battle and made some progress. I enjoyed watching So-ryong and Han Do and our Trigger team work together to gather evidence for Cha Seong-wook’s case. Han Do – the animal lover – got to finally revisit this side of him by interviewing an animal communicator who was connected to Cha Seong-wook’s dog. It’s obvious that President Koo had some type of involvement in Cha Seong-wook’s murder and even Chief Park is suspicious with his strange behavior and actions. I sort of had a bad feeling about Chief Park in the beginning of the drama and I wouldn’t be surprised if he did play some type of role in everything after all.
There wasn’t as much comedy and humor in episodes 7 and 8 which was such a shame given that the comedy is one of the drama’s biggest strengths. Additionally, I wished the drama would be a little bit better at introducing a case and then wrapping it up once it’s concluded. Sometimes the way a case ends feels a bit too abrupt and random and they sort of just cut off without you really realizing it or knowing for sure. Additionally, the way the cases conclude sometimes feel like a cheat cop-out (such as how Choi Ho-seong’s dad ended up just stabbing him to kill him and then that was it.. like what was that..). But even as bad as the drama gets, there are still some positives including Han Do and So-ryong’s funny banter as well as the growth of Gi-ho’s character. Sometimes I can’t help but feel like I would like to see a little bit more of Gi-ho and his involvement. It’d be fun to see our trio go on some fun adventures and shenanigans but it’s been a lot more Han Do with So-ryong rather than Han Do, So-ryong, and Gi-ho together. I still do enjoy our Han Do and So-ryong together, I just also would like to see Gi-ho do a bit more because his own character arc has potential in and of itself.
With the way that episode 8 primarily revolved around the Cha Seong-wook case, I’m really hoping it stays this way and doesn’t go off tangent again by bringing in another random, external case to accompany it. The drama is so much more enjoyable when it doesn’t multi-task and instead focuses on just one story at a time. Hopefully the drama keeps this up and ends the latter half with some momentum.
