[Discuss Away!] When the Stars Gossip: Episodes 11-12

This weekend’s episodes were probably one of the better ones in the show so far which says a lot given that there’s only 4 more episodes left, lol. It was primarily centered around Gong Ryong and Eve’s complicated relationship and the back and forth, push and pull dynamic that was going on between them. These two episodes did a good job in revealing both sides of their stories and feelings – whether it was about their break-up as seen in episode 11 or about their sweet romance as seen in episode 12. We also got progress on the lottery ticket, Gang-su’s pursuit after Go-eun, and more scenes of our characters returning back to normalcy on Earth.

I enjoyed episodes 11 and 12 a lot more than I thought I would and Gong Ryong and Eve was a big reason for that. Though I still don’t agree with the way that their relationship developed thus far (it happened too quickly and too soon, they barely knew each other and had spent time together, etc.), I liked that the drama at least went into more details about how Eve felt about Gong Ryong. We learned that she developed feelings for him once he treated her bleeding toe back when they were out in the space station. Then things snowballed from there and she realized that she liked him just as much as he liked her. Of course, I would have appreciated these comments earlier in the show so that I wouldn’t have been guessing how Eve felt about Gong Ryong or so that I would have been sold on their romance a little bit more. But at least the drama decided to give us more from Eve’s perspective and her sentiment about her relationship with Gong Ryong than nothing at all. The two “broke up” in episode 11 (and I know I’m going to sound like a terrible person for saying this but I was laughing while watching the cup ramen noodles break-up scene. It wasn’t supposed to be funny but I just found it so comedic for some reason). Then after various scenes of avoiding each other or trying to pretend as if there was nothing between them, the two were forced to finally address their awkward situation with each other. This got Eve to spill her feelings to Gong Ryong which then allowed them to make up and officially get back together.

It was nice to see the two do normal things that they mentioned they wanted to do when they returned to Earth. It was nice to see them have fun and spend time with each other without worrying about much. Gong Ryong took Eve to a sauna since she had never gone before. They went to a bakery to get some delicious bread. They walked in the rain together and enjoyed being in each other’s presence. The bakery scene was probably my favorite interaction between the pairing so far because we finally got insight as to how Eve and Gong Ryong each felt about their final moments out in the space station. For Eve, she had accepted the dangerous situation they were in and was okay with dying because she at least had Gong Ryong with her and was able to spend the final moments of her life with someone who she liked. For once, she didn’t feel alone. For Gong Ryong, he was afraid of dying because he wanted to spend more time with Eve and be able to have a future with her that transpired beyond just being out in space. This is consistent with what he said in the earlier episodes where he confessed to Eve that he wanted to go to the movies with her, go on dates, and do activities that couples do on Earth. It was so interesting to see their contrasting thoughts and sentiments. Though they were on opposite sides of the spectrum, the common denominator was that they felt the same way about each other, their feelings were aligned, and they wanted to be together.

Something that I was hoping the drama would show us a little bit more of was Gong Ryong’s relationship with his three moms because I think it’s such an interesting and fascinating set-up. Gong Ryong’s mom died giving birth to him so he was raised by his mom’s best friends and it would have been nice to see more of their interactions and dynamic. Each mom is different in their own way but it’s clear that they all care for Gong Ryong. They can be a bit harsh on him sometimes but it’s all tough love and I enjoy watching the three moms run their little restaurant or bicker with Gong Ryong.

It’s nice to finally just see our characters be back on Earth and walk around doing everyday things. I have to admit that it’s like a nice little breather and break from all the chaos that happened out in the space station (as crazy and entertaining as it was). But just because our characters are no longer out in space doesn’t mean that they’re off the hook. Things that happened back in outer space eventually caught up to them (as seen with the lottery ticket or the MZ group egg situation) and our characters will have to admit that there was a lot more going on out there in space than it seemed (Gong Ryong and Eve.. I’m looking at you two specifically). The break won’t last for too long because they’re already preparing for their next mission to outer space again. One would hope that things turn out much better and safer this time around but you also can’t rule anything out. Whether out in space or on land, there’s always something going on.
