[Discuss Away!] Unmasked: Episodes 9-12

I finally got around to finishing “Unmasked” after what was a very busy past two weeks with the release of “Melo Movie.” It took me longer to finish the final two episodes than expected but at last, I am here and I’m glad that I got around to finishing the drama. Though it wasn’t perfect, “Unmasked” was still pretty fun to watch.

The third act of the show focused on the investigation for the Cha Seong-wook case which then led to more focus on his wife, Cho Hae-won. Of course, caught in between all of this was President Koo and the politics surrounding him and his involvement with the case as well. Something that I wasn’t a big fan of for the drama was the theatrics and exaggeration with each case and the drama continued this trend even leading up to its final episode. I just felt like the drama was overdoing it too much with the villains for each case and it just got to the point where it became tiring and repetitive. Each time, the villain would just laugh or perform or act in a very villain-y way and these were the scenes that I skipped or fast forwarded for the most part. I felt like they didn’t serve that much of a purpose and it was the drama’s way of screaming at you that these were the villains as if it wasn’t already obvious enough.

But what I did not skip was the teamwork with our Trigger team and I found this one aspect to be the strongest and best thing about the drama. In episode 9, Gi-ho betrayed his team and caused trust issues among his team members. He ultimately chose himself over his team because he valued job security which led him to make the decision that he did. This caused a rift in the Trigger team and it was so interesting to watch things disrupt from within. Surprisingly enough, I sort of understood where Gi-ho was coming from or at least his point of view. His story was that he was a contract employee and wasn’t viewed as highly or respected within the company. This was his way of securing his job even if that meant doing something that his team disagreed with. So I could understand where he was coming from even if I didn’t necessarily agree with it. Then episode 10 got even better with the way that So-ryong stepped up to stand up for her team and to declare war against President Koo. Her press conference at the end of the episode when she made it seem as if she was going to resign and then ended up playing evidence in front of everyone was so cool. If episode 9 was focused on Gi-ho, episode 10 was So-ryong’s episode. This scene was a great way to illustrate why she was the leader of the team and as successful and respected as she was. Ultimately, our Trigger team was able to put an end to Cho Hae-won’s evil brother as well as President Koo who did many horrific and terrible things during his time as both a TV show producer as well as president.

“Unmasked” wasn’t the greatest drama but it had this way of keeping me just engaged enough to the point where I wanted to keep watching every week. Episodes 3 and 4 were still my favorite episodes from the drama but episodes 9 and 10 were also enjoyable and fun to watch. It was great to see Kim Hye-soo on the small screen again along with Jung Sung-il and Joo Jong-hyuk and it was fun to watch all of their shenanigans and back-and-forth banter. I’m not sure if the ending of episode 12 was hinting at a second season but if it was, I’d be open to tuning in.
