[Discuss Away!] Resident Playbook: Episodes 9-10

This week was another fun week of episodes! We finally got a confession from Do-won to Yi-young and the two love birds made things official. There were also plenty of heartwarming moments centered around professional growth and development: how to treat those who you work with, how to understand and process the way others treat you, and how to show your appreciation towards your colleagues.

If last week’s episodes were focused on Nam-kyung, this week’s episodes were about Sa-bi. I really enjoyed watching her story unfold. From the surprise revelation that she was actually a fan of Jae-il’s former idol group this entire time (and doing the choreography with Jae-il during karaoke haha) to standing up for herself in the workplace to being advocated for by her sunbae because of the way that she was being mistreated – there were many good things about her story in episodes 9 and 10. Sa-bi’s relationship with Jae-il might be what people paid attention to the most (and rightfully so.. they’re both so adorable!). However, what stole my heart and attention was the relationship between Doctor Ryu and Sa-bi. We’ve witnessed plenty of moments throughout the show of our 4 residents getting scolded, nagged, and yelled at for mistakes and failures. They’re not going to excel right away and they’re not going to always know all the answers. But that doesn’t mean that they should get yelled at, be disrespected, be looked down upon, and be talked to in a condescending and demeaning manner. There are ways to give constructive feedback and criticism; there are ways to approach someone and talk to them about work. The way that Doctor Jo went about always yelling at Sa-bi was way too much. It was scary, it was rude, it was disrespectful, and it was mean. I’m so glad and relieved that Doctor Ryu stood up for her and said something. It’s hard to stand up for yourself when you’re the hoobae/junior and you feel as if you’re not in a position where you can say anything. That’s why having someone like Doctor Ryu – who is also a doctor just like Doctor Jo – advocate for Sa-bi was so meaningful and important. Yes, it’s important to be able to stand up for yourself but it’s also helpful when you have someone who looks out for you and wants the best for you. Doctor Jo was that person for Sa-bi and I’m glad that Sa-bi has a sunbae who genuinely cares for her and her wellbeing.

Along those same lines, Jae-il learned a lesson the hard way when he discovered how he was perceived in the workplace. Because he was treated nicely by his sunbae, he wanted to also be that nice sunbae to an intern. While Jae-il was sincere and kind, the intern felt as if Jae-il was a pushover and took advantage of his kindness. The moment when Jae-il overheard the intern’s conversation was so heartbreaking and gut-wrenching. My heart hurt for him and I was so sad for him. It hurt even more when Jae-il pretended as if everything was okay to the intern but then wanted to cry to Do-won the very next second. And just like Do-won did in the beginning of the drama, Do-won was there for Jae-il once again and gave him some honest and helpful advice. Scolding an intern is never easy but they need to learn from their mistakes somehow. Jae-il wanted to pass on the good deed, but the intern merely saw it as him being a pushover and knew Jae-il would clean up his mess for him. Jae-il has such a soft and kind heart; this is just who he is. But this experience was another learning lesson for him in terms of how to treat others in the workplace. You have to adjust and adapt depending on who you’re interacting with. Not every person and situation is the same. Just because you were treated one way doesn’t mean that you should treat everyone else the same way. I really enjoyed watching the process in which Jae-il came to this realization. I didn’t like that he got hurt but I do think it was another eye-opening moment that will help him become an even better doctor in the future.

With next week already being the final week (time passes by so fast!), we will finally get to see everyone’s reaction to Yi-young and Do-won’s relationship. Jae-il was the first one to catch them together as we saw at the end of episode 10 but it’ll be most interesting to see how Yi-young’s sister and brother-in-law processes the news. The same thing could be said for Jae-il and Sa-bi who now have a special and adorable thing going on so it’ll be fun to see what people think about this pairing. It’s crazy to think about how the drama is already wrapping up next weekend. We’ve gotten plenty of cameos from the “Hospital Playlist” cast (and we even got a Na PD and Shin PD cameo LOL). While I feel like a proud friend watching our 4 residents do their jobs in the chaotic hospital environment and save their patient’s lives, it’s also been fun to watch them grow personally and professionally. There’s plenty of stuff going on at the hospital but there’s also plenty of stuff going on in their personal lives that brings you just as much joy and comfort.

Jae-il being so speechless to Sa-bi’s ‘why did you make us hide?’ got me giggling about them like crazy. they’re super, super cute!! but gosh, (☆ω☆) i’m triple excited to see how everyone will react to Do-won and Yi-young being together… the preview of ep 11 had made me so impatient haha.
