I felt so conflicted watching this week’s episodes of “Good Boy.” I really wanted to like this drama so much more but I unfortunately was not feeling episodes 5 and 6. I didn’t really like the direction that it went in and although there were still some good parts, I overall felt as if the two episodes were a letdown.
I really enjoyed watching our Olympic Avengers go out and do the field investigation. That’s the best and funnest part about the drama. It’s great seeing them all contribute in their own ways and each play a role in gathering clues or hints. Add the comedic effect to these team bonding activities and moments and the drama is great. However, everything else outside of the team just drags on and brings down any momentum that the drama developed.
It’s unfortunate that the drama is focused on just one big case because I would have enjoyed the drama so much more if it was simply about our Olympic Avengers going after bad guys every few episodes. Instead, the drama is slow and painful because it follows one case that involves various groups and criminals – one of them being Ju-yeong who’s the face of the villains. The drama is stretching everything out and I’m not sure if I have the patience to wait it out every week.
Unfortunately, I think “Good Boy” is one of those dramas where I’m going to have to wait for the rest of the episodes to drop just so I can binge watch it all. I want so much more from the drama and yet I feel like I’m not really getting much every week. It kind of feels like it’s all over the place which is another reason as to why I think I might wait for the rest of the episodes to drop first before resuming the drama. I for a second thought about dropping the drama after watching episode 5 because it was just a little too quirky and odd for me. We got the introduction of two new villains who we learned Ju-yeong was working with. I could understand why the drama introduced the two new characters (it’s good to freshen things up because you’ve been seeing the same faces the past 4 episodes. It also makes sense because we know Ju-yeong isn’t doing all this work alone). However, I was not a big fan of what the drama did with the female villain, Yeon-ha (AKA Drugmon). I thought it was such an odd choice to have her suddenly fall for Dong-ju and like him. Maybe I’m still just triggered from “Tastefully Yours” and the sudden appearance of the ex-boyfriend which ruined my watching experience of the drama, but I felt icky when Drugmon had a crush on Dong-ju. It was unnecessary, the drama didn’t need to go there, and Dong-ju and Han-na already have a thing for each other.
So while I wasn’t a big fan of episode 5, episode 6 sort of redeemed my attention and trust in the drama – for the most part. Again, it was primarily due to the fact that we got to see our team go out and actually do some work which was fun and entertaining. I just really like their teamwork and the ways that they remain active in their investigation behind Ju-yeong and the “Drugmon” person (who they don’t know just yet was actually in front of them the entire time). But then things got a bit silly when Man-sik’s daughter suddenly returned from the Philippines out of nowhere and was placed in the same space as Drugmon. And suddenly, all the police officers and detectives disappeared to chase after the fake Drugmon which allowed the real Drugmon and Man-sik’s daughter to escape. It’s not the smartest writing and I’m trying to gloss over it but at the same time, there’s a few other aspects about the drama that’s giving me warning signs and that I just am not the biggest fan of.

Such as is the case with Dong-ju once again confronting Ju-yeong at the end of episode 6. I was afraid the drama was going to get repetitive with the amount of times that Ju-yeong and Dong-ju interacted with each other. I get that Ju-yeong is using his customs officer position to mask all his shady criminal activities, but I’m shocked at how many times Dong-ju has threatened him up until this point. The first few times are fine, but when it happens over and over again in almost every single episode, the threats get stale. The tension between the two gets old and repetitive. It doesn’t have as much of a punch or impact as it used to. How many more times is Dong-ju going to threaten and confront Ju-yeong? At some point, you kind of just want Dong-ju to focus on working with his team to investigate Ju-yeong so that there can be actual actions taken against him. But because the drama is 16 episodes long, Ju-yeong can’t get caught just yet so the drama has to drag things on. Also, the last 15 minutes of episode 6 had me on the edge of my seat – in both a good and bad way. I’m glad that nothing happened to Man-sik’s daughter and that she wasn’t killed. If the drama had gone in that direction, I would have been so angry and upset and I really do think I would have dropped the drama. But then the drama ended up killing off Gyeong-il’s mom which wasn’t any better so it was heartbreaking and devastating. I just can’t seem to win with this drama because just when I think it’s doing okay, it takes two steps back and disappoints. It also feels as if it’s not really sure it knows what type of drama it wants to be. We get the comedy and humor between the team, Man-sik, as well as the friendly rivalry between Dong-ju and Jong-hyeon. But then we also get the violence, grittiness, and darker tone with Ju-yeong which sort of throws me off.
I really hate feeling this way because I really wanted to like the drama and I wanted it to be better. I never feel good criticizing dramas because you hope that they turn out to be good, but “Good Boy” killed any momentum that it carried from last week’s episodes. A week ago, I was satisfied with the drama and happy with where it went. And then this week’s episodes took another turn. I think I’m going to give it two more episodes to see whether I still want to continue watching but just wait for all the episodes to drop first or just drop the drama entirely. There’s a few things that’s causing me to have a bad feeling about the drama or that’s causing me to not enjoy it as much as I want to. I really just want to see our Olympic Avengers work together to chase after bad guys and although we sort of do get that, we don’t get it nearly enough. Let’s see how next week’s episodes turn out.
